Our Beliefs & Practices

Faith Lutheran Church is a Biblical, Confessional, and Liturgical congregation of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. We believe, teach, and confess that the Holy Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God, and that through His Word and Sacraments our Lord Jesus Christ gives forgiveness, life, and salvation to sinners.

Our confession can be summarized in a few key points:

  • Christ crucified and risen for you is at the center of all preaching and teaching.
  • God delivers His gifts through His appointed means of grace: Word and Sacraments.
  • The historic creeds and Lutheran Confessions faithfully echo the teaching of Scripture.
  • Worship is shaped by the reverent, historic liturgy of the Church.

At the center of everything we do is Christ who comes to serve His people in the Divine Service through the preaching of the Gospel, Holy Baptism, Holy Absolution, and the Sacrament of the Altar.

What is a Lutheran Church

A Lutheran church is first and foremost a Christian church. We confess the Holy Trinity, the saving work of Jesus Christ, and the one, holy, Christian and apostolic Church, together with Christians of every time and place. We gladly confess:

  • The Apostles’ Creed
  • The Nicene Creed
  • The Athanasian Creed

as faithful summaries of the clear teaching of Holy Scripture.

To be Lutheran is to place Christ at the center. His atoning death and victorious resurrection are the heart of our preaching and worship. In the Divine Service, our Lord comes not to be served but to serve, giving His gifts through His Word and Sacraments. We receive these gifts with thanksgiving and are sent into our daily vocations to love and serve our neighbors.

Lutherans also confess the Book of Concord (the Lutheran Confessions of 1580) as a faithful exposition of the Christian faith. These writings do not stand above Scripture, but they clearly confess what the Church has always believed and taught on the basis of God’s Word.

Our Mission in Johnstown, Colorado

Our mission in Johnstown is simple and enduring: to proclaim Christ and His gifts where our Lord has placed us. We gather around His Word and Sacraments so that sinners might receive forgiveness, comfort, and hope, and then live out their callings in the home, the workplace, the congregation, and the community.

This mission is lived out in many ways, including:

  • Gathering for the Divine Service to hear God’s Word and receive Christ’s body and blood.
  • Teaching the faith to children and adults through catechesis, Bible study, and preaching.
  • Strengthening Christian families as a good gift from God and the foundation of society.
  • Serving neighbors in love through acts of mercy and daily vocations.
  • Confessing God’s unchanging truth in an age of confusion and “anti-truth.”

The Divine Service is the beating heart of this mission, as our Lord gathers His people to receive His gifts and sends them out again. If you would like to see when we gather around His Word and Sacraments, you can view our church current service times.

What is a Missouri Synod Lutheran?

Faith Lutheran Church is a congregation of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS). To be a Missouri Synod Lutheran is to share in a common confession of faith grounded in Holy Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions, and to join with other congregations in the preaching of Christ crucified and risen for the life of the world.

Within the LCMS, congregations “walk together” in:

  • A shared confession of doctrine and practice.
  • Mission work at home and abroad.
  • Mercy efforts for those who suffer and are in need.
  • Theological education for pastors, teachers, and church workers.
  • Mutual encouragement to remain steadfast in the Gospel.

Being part of the LCMS also means that visitors can expect a familiar, reverent liturgy and a clear confession of Christ’s saving work from place to place.
